This paper aims to show in detail the current state of the management of the marketplace Veinte de Julio concerning the generation, separation at source, use and disposal of waste, as well as to propose preventive actions for sustainability. Plans of integral management of solid waste (pgirs) are important for the waste planning in several organizations. Despite their importance, the marketplaces fails in the formulation of the pgirs, because of the lack of the Institute for Social Economics’ (Instituto para la Economía Social, ipes) and the management itself of the establishments’ trained staff. On the marketplace Veinte de Julio there is 80 % organic waste generation rate, 15 % of inorganic waste and 5 % of waste meat. This waste can produce usufruct as high as 90 %, although currently they profit from just around 25 % of the waste, generating unnecessary costs of transport and disposal. It also decreases the lifespan of Doña Juana landfill (in the city of Bogotá), increasing pollution and proliferation of harmful fauna. Therefore, it is necessary to implement different alternatives for waste management, like using it for compost, production of animal food concentrate, among others, working through the marketplace programs for economic, social and environmental improvement.
